Panchakarma treatment is basically a Bio Cleansing regimen intended to eliminate the toxic elements from the body and thereby enhance immunity of the body. It has a great importance in Ayurveda. Panchakarma treatment is believed to help in radical elimination of the disease causing factors and maintains equilibrium of doshas.
The term Panchakarma is made out of two words, Pancha and Karma.
These are the procedures capable of removing vitiated Doshas (Toxins) in bulk quantity, and are hence given importance as the five important modalities of treatments.
Vaman is one of the major procedures in Panchakarma, and is the best treatment for Kapha Dosha. It is a unique procedure of eliminating Dosha from the body through the oral route.
Virechana is the ideal and best treatment for the elimination of Pitta Dosha and to some extent other two Doshas also. Here the orally administered drug acts on internally situated doshas and expels them out of the body through anal route.
Basti is the prime line of treatment for Vata Dosha. It has not only curative aspects but also preventive and promotive aspects. In Basti Karma drugs are administered through the anal canal
Nasa (Nose) is said to be the door of the Shira (Head). Medicine administered through the nose, spread through the Shiras and helps in the evacuation of Dosha, thereby pacifying the diseases. Nasya Karma is the main line of treatment for diseases above the clavicle.
One among the unique procedure mentioned for the disorders caused due to vitiation of Rakta. Letting out impure blood from the body is known as Raktamokshana.
